Professional PAT Testing for Your Home or Business

What is PAT testing?

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT testing) is a process in which electrical appliances are routinely checked for safety to ensure they are in good working condition and do not pose a risk of electrical shock or fire. This involves both a visual inspection of the appliance and its plug, as well as electrical testing using specialized equipment to detect any internal faults. PAT testing is commonly carried out in workplaces, rental properties, homes and public spaces to comply with health and safety regulations.

Do my appliances need PAT testing?

PAT testing is often carried out at intervals of 12 months but can be up to 2 years based on the type of appliance, the location it is used or stored and how often it's used. While not a legal requirement in itself, PAT testing helps organizations and landlords comply with health and safety regulations, such as the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. For homeowners it may provide peace of mind about the safety of your appliances such as washing machines and kettles, but for landlords and employers it may be the best way to meet your statutory requirements for electrical safety.

What does PAT testing involve?

The process begins with a visual examination to identify any obvious signs of damage, such as frayed cables or loose plugs. This is followed by testing with a PAT tester device, which checks for issues like earth continuity, insulation resistance, and proper polarity. The appliance is then labelled with a pass or fail sticker, and the results are typically recorded for safety and compliance purposes.

What will I receive after the testing?

On completion of the PAT testing you will receive a digital report that details the results. Most importantly you will be given a list of any failed items with a short explanation so they can be sent for repair or replaced before any electrical damage or injuries happen. Each appliance will also be labelled which can be referenced against the full inventory detailing each appliance type, name, specification and description. Finally we will recommend a suitable interval until the next test is required.

How much will it cost?

As a local electrical company we can carry out PAT testing for homes and businesses near to Wickford, South Woodham Ferrers and Chelmsford at a competitive rate. The cost will depend on quantity and can be as low as £2 per appliance, although there is no minimum amount of appliances and we will always work with landlords and small businesses to keep costs reasonable.
